Unbound Energy’s Chad Reed Wins World SX GP Opener in Toronto
‘Reedy’ starts the season on a high note, topping Stewart & Carmichael in season's first race
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Dec. 4, 2006) – Unbound Energy Drink-backed Chad Reed (San Manuel/Yamaha) was victorious this past weekend at the opening round of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP season at Rogers Center in Toronto.
Reed, who won the World Supercross GP title two years ago, put on a near flawless performance in topping both the defending World Supercross GP champion James Stewart and last year’s Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series champion, Ricky Carmichael.
“Definitely a good way to start the season,” said Reed. “Larry Brooks and the new San Manuel/Yamaha team have done an incredible job preparing the bike. Our goal was to use this race for some final testing, hopefully get up on the podium. So to come away with the win was excellent, something we can continue to gain momentum off this coming weekend in Vancouver (B.C.) and for the Anaheim opener.”
Reed and Stewart battled aggressively – enough so that at one point the two came together just prior to the finish line jump, with Stewart winding up leaving the track. Carmichael, who had also gone down, put on a valiant effort in pursuit of Reed, but wasn’t able to catch the speedy Aussie.
“Stewart almost knocked me over the first time he passed me, and that fired me up,” said Reed on the key to his victory.
Reed’s Unbound Energy-backed teammate Nathan Ramsey made the Supercross class main event, but retired after six (of 20) laps.
Next up for Unbound Energy’s Reed is Round Two of the 2007 World Supercross GP Championship at Vancouver’s B.C. Place Stadium (Dec. 9).
