2006-’07 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series/Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP Schedule
AURORA, Ill. (July 11, 2006) – The 2006-’07 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series/Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP schedule was announced today, bringing the high-profile off-road motorcycle racing tour to some of the United States and Canada’s most prominent markets. The 2006-’07 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series/Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP will begin at Rogers Centre in Toronto December 2, 2006 and concludes at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas May 5, 2007.
After once again opening the 17-stop season in Canada, racing will return to the U.S. on January 6, 2007 where the first of the fabled ‘Anaheim trio’ begins. Since 1999, 18 of the 22 races held in Anaheim’s Angel Stadium have sold out. The first Anaheim round, or “A1” as it has since become known, will mark the first stop on the 16-round AMA series.
“We are happy to once again start our Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP season in Canada,” said Ken Hudgens, vice president of marketing and television. “In the two years since we started racing in Canada, our fan base has begun to expand. As we work our way across the country to our favorite destination in Las Vegas, fans will be treated to another great season of racing in North America’s most premier venues.”
Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series champion Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, Kawasaki’s reigning Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP champion James Stewart and former World Supercross GP and AMA Supercross champion Chad Reed will kick off the 2006-’07 season at Toronto’s Rogers Centre to defend their respective titles on December 2.
The sport of supercross has become tradition in the cities named in the 2006-’07 schedule. The stop in Houston has been on the schedule for 35 years, giving the local economy a multi-million dollar economic impact.
Last year the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series/Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/enjoyed its largest attendance in history, attracting 830,851 live event spectators. The Atlanta stop at the Georgia Dome topped the all-time attendance record with 70,133 fans.
Not only did the live event attendance numbers reach milestones, the television package of SPEED and CBS Sports increased television audience by 40%. More than 14 million households watched supercross in 2006 compared to 10 million in 2005.
AMA Chief Executive Officer Patricia DiPietro is looking forward to another successful Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series. “In terms of awareness, popularity and continued growth opportunities, AMA Supercross ranks at the top of the list among professional motorcycle racing disciplines,” said DiPietro. “We’re excited about the chance to once again showcase the best riders in the world in this uniquely American form of motorcycle sport.”
