Your Collection: 1979 CR125

Monday, December 10, 2012 | 1:00 PM

This weeks collection comes to us from Mick Varsava in Canada.

I bought a new 1979 CR125 when they originally came out. When I saw this barn find, I had to have it. It needed seals, a clutch, top end, chain, sprockets, grips, levers and a good bath. The tank, plastic, seat and fork boots are all original. The tires appear to be original as well. The bike sounds and runs great. I share these photos to celebrate our hometown racer Cole Thompson who is railing himself a pro career in AMA SX & MX.

Thanks

- Mick

Ah yes… The 23 in front wheel. Who knew it would become the industry standard and found on all modern motocross bikes produced today. Honda, always the innovator..

@COPRO - Let's not forget the equally innovative "claw" pattern tire. lol

great find!! My buddy bought a new one in 79, we called it "the spider".... I had the 77 red CR125 and this thing was like factory compared to that...he went faster just by sitting on it LOL

I think you need to take another look at your tire size. 23 was a flop .

Nice job on the restore! Man, i had a 79 and 80 CR250. Replaced the original back shocks with those super cool Fox Air ones. Amazing that the kids today think FOX is a cool "new" clothing company. Also, my kickstart was on the left hand side of the bike. I didn't realize the 125 had it on the right side.

@AF500
Have you priced a 'Claw' recently? lol

And if you notice… the Canadian bikes were right side drive. The American bikes had the drive on the left and the Euro bikes had shaft drive.. C’mon.. It’s all ball bearings these days fellas… motobk should have known...

I love Hondas from this era and would love to have a '79 250 with Fox shocks sitting in the garage next to my 450. Is it even possible to get a 23" tire these days?

Yea, I have one. Bought an '80 CR250 a couple of years ago for vintage racing. "Hmm, front looks odd." It's like musical chairs sometimes with older bikes and I ended up with a 23" front end. I can make ya a good deal on it.......

xray, you can get FoxShocks all day. Rebuilt set is about $700.

motobk, apparently sarcasm goes right over your head.

This was my first ever MX bike, followed by the '80 and the '81. The '80 was my favorite of the three. Had Fox Shox on the first two. In '82 I raced a friend's CR; '83 I switched to Suzook. Those '79 gas tanks didn't hold paint for long. Great memories, though.

Sweet bike! I have one that is brand new and has never been started. Never seen gas. Found it in a create 10 years ago. Rode one back in the day and that 23" front end invented the term "headshake" It was a really high siding queen.

Very nice job, I had a '78 CR250 w/ Fox airs & Simmons Forks. Very cool bike, actually my first of MANY Hondas. It helped reformed this previous Suzookalcholic!
