Makes me cringe everytime I hear about a neck or back injury. Hope everything works out and has a full recovery
He must not have unlocked his hips
Prayers for you and your family, Ryan, Was that you at Pala, ? be strong...
Get well soon.
@Kxpwr18 Your a F'en idiot to make a comment like that.......
I know first hand about back injuries and have a sever one myself..I hope Ryan is going to be ok, Back injuries are no joke.....
Ryan,
On 11-11-12, I broke my T5 and T6 vertebrae, along with my wrist. While I consider myself to be in good shape, I do not consider myself to be at your level. That being the case, after 11 weeks, I was back to 100% and riding again with very minimal effects. I will pray for you and I wish you a speedy recovery.
Get well Ryan!
Disabled comments for the YZ270F test, but not for Ryan Hughes' injury? Interesting.

He's a tough dude. He's gonna be fine. I think he even might have got a chuckle about the locked hips thing. Wishing the best.
Well,....that sux,....Hope it isn't too bad Rhino, I bet ya don't forget that day. I squashed t-7-t-8 almost 30 yrs ago, but walk ok.. GL man and thanks for all those yrs of tough racing...but now probably be a good time to rethink the racin thing . free advice, always worth exactly what ya paid for it. Joe.
I broke my back 20 years ago. I stood up immediately afterwords and was at first only angry that I had fallen. When I went to walk my leg felt funny so I reached down and could feel the bone in my hip, which had been dislocated *forwards* (which I'm told is pretty rare). After gathering myself and lying down I remember wiggling my toes in my boots and thinking, "I'm busted up, but I'm okay." After that it was like hanging your arm off the back of a chair. Everything just faded out over the next hour. Haven't felt or moved since. T-7 (chest level). To this day, it is harder to hear about it happening to others than it was to deal with myself, largely because I was ignorant when it happened to me. Now I know what others are about to face. Always super-pumped when others are able to walk away from such injuries. Paralysis isn't fun at any level. Only those who know can really know. Hughes has always been Ryno tuff. I'll bet you anything that his level of fitness saved him. Get well soon Ryan.

I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Best comment of the year.
11 weeks riding after a broken wrist and 3 broken vertebrae? You must be superman.. Or yours were only Minorly fractured. A real break requires a fusion (I had L3 fusion), which takes 6 months to heal. I hope Ryan's is very minor such as your was.
I am very sorry to hear about your injury Thor. That was the most emotional read I have had in a long time, and something I worry about for all of us. Is it really worth the risk? My good friend just died going over the bars and ruptured his Aorta, leaving his whole family alone. I question my future, as we age we think about this.
Do you think if you wouldn't have stood up or moved around that things would have turned out different? I read jimmy button said its very essential to get on prednisone immediately. My prayers are with you tonight, very touching.
Rick
Ryan went to South America a little over 2 years ago to train kids, he was recomending them NOT to wear neck braces, my nephew stopped wearing it and crashed, broke his back and almost didn't make it, after several surgeries and a lot of rehab he's ok now but can't ride anymore.
Maybe Ryan should've been wearing one and maybe would not have broken his back.
This is a true story.
Anyway hope he gets well
Shake it off Ryno

I witnessed the crash firsthand, happened right in front of me,as my son was being trained by him. They were just warming up on a whooped out section of the track,I watched Ryan the first time through, and couldnt believe the speed he carried, was thinking to my self he hasnt lost a thing, next time through he started to swap, never was able to let off, it was an ugly crash. He did not loose conscious, and a neck brace would not have helped in this case.He broke his back not his neck ! Good luck Ryan, I know youll be back.
ryan ..a few years ago i stubbed my toe and it really really really hurt..i even swore..then my mom grounded me..so we are like comrades in arms or battle tested blood bros..see ya at the arcade...donkey kong..its on!!!

Hughes is a Baaaad aaaassss warrior.
This will just make him stronger and faster. Look out SoCal Vet classes...
Get well soon RH..., you're clients need ya!
T3/T4 is across the mid-back; armpit level. Don't know if a neck brace would have made any difference for this region of the spine.
I don't know Ryan. But he seems to be a true warrior. Controversial... But that means you stand up for yourself on occasion. Ryan, get well soon. We need guys like you. Many of us vet riders who you've never met are inspired by your discipline and kick butt lifestyle.
I HATE Ryan Hughes...and this does not change a thing. If it was up to me, all Liberals would die. So I could care les about his health.
Tweets from the flamming Liberal...looks like he is done with MX.
Ever you will never see me on a bike again - I bow down to motocross, it beat me, it won but I will be back stronger than ever with more

Eat shit and die.................Anyone that would tout ill towards anyone in distress physically is a moron Period..................So you must agree ! If you dont you didnt have a very good upbringing I have one word for you GLOCK 26 >>>
As far as the guy from South America, you make your own choices when racing. People break there necks and backs in motocross. It is a very rough sport, so don't blame Ryan for your crash.
Any body that is talking shit about the Ryno, when he is on his back, is a piece of shit. He is one of the hardest working riders the world, and some of you may not agree with him,
I am sure we have all layed there and wiggled our toes after a bad crash at least a few times. Good luck Rayn
Jimmtc261, so about what happend, but for you to blame someone else for there crash, is wrong. Maybe take up Salsa dancing.

Pizza corner, you must be a big jerk off to say things like that. What do you ride? A big fat DICK. Keep riding that, you sorry piece of junk.
Jimmyc261, if you know anything about neck braces, they protect the neck, not the back.
There is no doctor in the world, that can say a neck brace is going to protect you 100 percent. Every crash is different.
I dont think he was blaming Ryan for the crash, just saying Ryan was recommending kids dont wear neck braces.
I was never a big fan but anyone who wishes him ill or mocks him right now really needs to get help. Seriously, there is something wrong with you.
I fully agree with you. No matter who likes or dislikes the Ryno, this is not the time to be talking shit about someone when he and his family are going through what their going through.
If you know the Ryno personally , you know 100 percent, he mean well and is a really good guy. He has giving motocross 100 percent over all these years, more than I can say for some of then these days.

Dude, can you please exlpain to me how wearing or not wearing a neck brace has anything to do with BACK injuries?
Take your time and heal properly. Use alternative pain medicine. Have "Jesus" keep us updated on here.
Why does RacerX let that pos pizza on here? That guy is just plain pathetic and is obviously making up for a itty bitty teenie tiny weenie! He can't stand him but yet takes time from making meth to post ignorance.
@pizzacorner, Why waste all that time for somebody you wish would die--you are the perfect example of HATE in the Republican Party.. Your life must be really sorry and bad..
Factorymessageboard, one thing you have to understand about South Americans, is they don't listen, understand, and alway want to blame other people. I agree with you, how does a neck brace prevent a back injury. In South America, they make it mandatory for riders to wear the neck brace, but don't make them wear knee braces, or a helmet the is snall approved. Some riders don't even wear knee cup. How often do riders get knee injures, verses back or neck?
Pizza corner, is nothing but trash. Davey should not even let some low piece of shit write on this page. How can you talk like that, when somebody like Ryno gave his whole life to the sport he loves pizza corner needs to go make pizzas, ride that 12 inch dick, and go to hell.
Get well soon,best wishes!
Been there done that. 5-25-1985 T3,4,5.
Sucks. No lingering affects, yet.
Still race dirt bikes.
I burst fractured my T5 and T8 back in August 12, 2012. I have now just begun feeling more normal since that incident. To the guy that started riding 11 weeks from the break, I give props because 11 weeks after mine I was still in quite a bit of pain. I had a fusion from my T4 to my T10 with two titanium rods and 10 screws holding me together. It was a scary thing but already sold my bike and have given it up. It was the hardest thing I had to do but feel better now about doing it. God Speed Ryno.. you are a beast.
I think what pizza was trying to say, but he did not do so eloquently, is that Ryan Hughes has made a few enemies. He comes off very arrogant, and has no problem voicing his opinions (like all of us) but has ditched out on sponsors and taken free merits.
That being said, never kick a man in the nuts when he is down. One thing about Ryan Hughes, he is tough.. 5 gets you 10 he is back on a bike in 6 months going fast again. He has that never say die attitude.
We all wish him well, and please don't confuse the Republican Party with hate. Politics is ok until a fellow rider is down, then we need to put it aside and be serious.
I'm guessing pizza has had a personal issue with Ryan, I don't know... But he seems truely jaded about something. He should try not to say anything if its bad tho.. Better left unsaid, but don't turn this into a bash board.
Get well Ryan
@ billc, if you haven't wiggled your toes in your boots after a crash you weren't going fast when you crashed but good point. T-3,4 and 6, did number 6 first, non displaced break 2 months off the bike, 1 week off the towmotor. The 3 and 4 snapped the ribs of the vertabrae and shock fractured them along with breaking the ribs above and below the T-3 and 4. One month out of work and 3 months off the bike, sold it later in the year after I finished the local season, wifes' orders.
Get well soon Ryan.
God's speed Ryno.
And Thor7? That was one of the most heart-wrenching/touching stories I've ever read on this site. Thank you sir.
And for the asshats on this thread slamming a fellow Rider/Racer for a serious injury of our beloved sport...do us all a favor & go eat a bullet!
Since I have been of the board for a few days, Just logged on and saw this. Yes Ryan broke his back , not good! Yes he is still in very good physycal shape so he should be able to heal up well with todays medical technology!
I broke my T3 in 76 and the first hospital wanted to keep me in bed for 12 weeks and operate? Well since my dad seved in WW2 I was able to Xfer to the militaary hospital in Iowa City (I think?) well the docs there worked with me I got weights for pulling set up over my bed and because I was in very good shape as we motocrossers are My Dad and I talked them out of surgury and after 12 days they put a plaster cast from the top of my woody to the bottom of my neck. Remember this was 1976, Well after 9 months I started riding again this is after I started runing for the month before. Now over time my 3 and 4 have fused together. so I hope the best for Ryan and I think all will be ok! I was only paralized for about 4 hours so that was a good prognosis in those days.
Good Luck Rhyno, and GOD Bless! You will ride again soon!
Do you know Ryno personally ? What free merits are you talking about? What sponsors has he ditched? I am in the motocross industry. And I can name a few sponsor that have not paid Ryan over the year. Ryan may be hated by some, but he will give shirt off his back for people. Maybe you all need to know him, before bashing him in a time lick this.
You guys and this neck brace. Just because someone tell you to jump off a roof, are you going to do it? Every crash is different, never the same. Ask the riders who have gotten hurt wearing the neck brace. Ask them what they think of it? That was Ryan's opinion, he did not make him do it, nor did Ryan make him crash. Do you guys ride? No amount of protect in the world is going to save you. If it is your turn to get hurt, it's your turn. Quit blaming other people. Just likely Ryan, he's not blaming anyone or anything for his crash, shit happens in motocross. If the AMA, had 100 percent proof neck braces worked, they would make everyone wear them. There is no proof. Motocross is a dangerous sport, and that is the chance you take. If you want something safer, take up Salsa dancing.
Kicking a man when he's down: classless. Who would write such crap? No one with any cojones and half a brain would type such remarks. Oh..., it's that guy. Pizza, you're a Coward. Anger management classes are available.
Get well soon Hughes. It's kinda scary to read about all you guys's injuries... but we all decided to ride/race moto and these kinda injuries go along with our sport unfortunately.
pizza guy pleeze die.Ryno is not loved by all but he is one of the nicest and hardest working riders that ever threw a leg over a bike EVER!! again pizza just die and most all of us will smile just a little more.good luck with a complete recovery ryno.Almost all of us will be waiting to see you ride again.
Get well ryno.....stay off the bike and do the training stuff.
