- Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey set the fastest lap in 450SX with a 53.236 on lap 6.

- Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard set the latest fastest lap with a 54.067 on lap 14.

- Dungey clicked off eight straight laps under 54-second to begin the race.

- Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia rebounded with his first podium since his win in Phoenix at A3—two DNF’s in-between. The vibrant youngster led the field with only one lap over 54 seconds. Rockstar Energy Racing’s, and current points leader, Davi Millsaps had only two laps over 54-seconds en route to a second place finish.

- After his crash on lap 3—where he ran a 1:08.920—Ryan Villopoto logged 17 straight laps under 56-seconds to end the race.

- An early crash put Chad Reed in a hole for the second consecutive week. The Aussie would rebound to finish fifth—beginning the race with 18 consecutive laps under 56-seconds.

- Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart had his best finish of the season at A3, but three bad laps (14,18 and 20) would cost the two-time champion his first podium of the year. Stewart set 16 of 19 laps under 55-seconds, but those three laps proved costly. See more below.

One of the most intriguing battles of the night took place between a two-time champion, the current points leader, and the hotshot rookie. Stewart, Millsaps and Barcia jostled for position all night, with Millsaps eventually winning the war of attrition—finishing runner-up behind Dungey. But let’s take a deeper look and see where exactly time was gained and lost.

Stewart began applying pressure to Millsaps early, eventually taking over second on lap 6 (first full lap registered in second) with a 53.934 on lap 5 compared to Millsaps’ 54.528. Stewart held Millsaps at bay for a number of laps before the points leader mounted a charge that began on lap 9—but was helped tremendously when Stewart made a mistake in the rhythm section and set a 56.555 to Millsaps’ 54.871, letting Millsaps gain almost two full seconds and second place in the process.

Soon after, Stewart was getting pressure from Barcia for third. Barcia was also able to pick up nearly two seconds on Stewart on lap 14. But the real game changer came on lap 18, when Barcia picked up another two seconds on Stewart, ending Stewart’s chances for his first podium of the season.

- Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos set the fastest lap of the night (450/250 combined) with a 53.117 on lap 3. Davalos joins Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen and GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac as the only riders in 250SX to set the fastest lap in the class this year.

- Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Jessy Nelson set the latest fastest lap with a 55.075 on lap 12.

- Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen were the only riders in the 250 class to set all of their laps under 56-seconds.

- Martin Davalos was on fire early at Anaheim 3—beginning the race with seven consecutive laps under 54-seconds.

- But Roczen did one better, netting 12 laps under 54-seconds to top the 250 class. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson, Eli Tomac and Martin Davalos tied for second with 11 laps under 54-seconds.

- Star Racing Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham scored a season-high fourth at Anaheim 3. Cunningham was one of the most consistent riders at round five—beginning the race with 13 straight laps under 55-seconds.


Comparison:

Ken Roczen vs. Martin Davalos

- During the first half of the 250 main event, second-place Martin Davalos was applying pressure to Ken Roczen. Roczen held a small lead based on his blistering speed on lap two, which was his fastest lap of the night. But on five of the first seven laps, Davalos went faster than Roczen.

- The race changed quite a bit in the second half. Davalos was faster on five of the first seven laps, but Roczen was faster on six of the last seven. Check their average times from the first half of the race and the second half: Roczen average lap time rose by one second in the second half, while Davalos’ increased his time by a second and a half. Total that extra half second over seven laps, and Roczen has a solid win.

Im pretty sure Davalos was off the hook as soon as Rattray failed to qualify for the main event. PC should have hired another kid to ride Baggetts bike while he is out cause its looking really bad for them right now. Hopefully Deano can turn things around but overall PC's dominant days are few and far between lately. KTM and Geico are dominating.

Honestly, I thought Reed did great. Sucked to see him down early again, but he put on a great charge and all things considered - I think that was probably his best ride to date. Nice to see the lap times confirm it. He'll be ok - he'll stay in it through the ups and downs and still be a factor at the final round as usual.

Those are some pretty damn close averages for the 450 main... WOW...1st thru 6th all within a half second for their best lap and their avg lap times....Judging from the TV coverage, it looked like Reed was only a straight away behind from the lead pack most the race and seemed to be out of the heavy traffic after lap 2 or 3 - after a couple more pile ups....With how tight those times are, making up ground was pretty tough and by lap 8 Reed had that open track gap back in 5th between him and the Stew, Barcia, Saps battle for most the race......

SD should be an intersting race....Reed is going to be fired up since that is "HIS" track....RV is coming off a bad night and going to be on fire too....plus Saps is riding great....Dungey is Dungey and Stewart is making progress.....

To anyone who says he is done, and washed up, needs to lay off the Meth.

The laptimes are so much tighter than last year. On any given day, 6-8 people could podium... this is a great season.

I think there will finally be a bigger shake up in the points this week. Thinking RV will move into second in the chase and close the gap on Milsaps.

Reed will have a good ride and get his first trip to the box.

Dungey will have the KTM in better form and not need an LCQ to get to the main where we will get a top 4 or 5 start and even make a pass or 2.

Canard, Barcia, Milsaps and Stew will all mix it up and maybe I get the order right?

Stewart may only be looking for the Top 10 Red Bull $ and may not push too hard. (Could even be the last we see of him this year?) Though it would be a surprise because he looked pretty solid at A3 and appears to be an easy top 5 with a decent start. Problem is he is likely not battling for a championship so he may opt to fix bum knee?

Great season and Milsaps deserves BIG Props for his efforts so far!!

Reed was 13th on lap one and up to 6th by lap 3 when he had a 53.821...Lots of dudes crashing those first few laps and Reed had pretty much an open track after lap 3 - besides when he was battlin' with Shorty for 5th a few laps towards lap 10.... He looked better than previous weeks indeed, but he didnt have to deal with too much heavy traffic at all really....looking at the laptime sheet his times are right there with the other guys - actually he was a little slower running 55's during the middle of the race while Dungey, Stew and Saps were still running 54's....but overall it was a good ride for all those guys considering....track looked slick for sure....that 1:08 for RV on lap 3 screwed the pooch for him as far as avgs go...Wonder if Alessi had fun with that one - doing burn outs on a fallen RV.....

@red54 - I think Stewart is in for the long haul.....pending any further injury to the knee....Round 1 and 2 I was thinking the same and thought he'd throw in the towel...but the dude is tough...if the knee doesnt get worse, it will get a little better and he'll race the outdoors with the bum knee as well im guessin'.....if the outdoors are a disaster, he'll bail out and get the knee fixed for 2014

@ BillC, agreed, Milsaps is bound to get a bad start, have someone take him down or push him off track (almost happened with Alessi last week). Thing is Davi has been getting the starts and that bike is handling awesome. He has not had the front end wash outs and seems to be able to put it where he wants.

Lady luck has been on his side so far and he has been making that luck. If it continues all year, what a story that would be. I just have a feeling RV is coming back with a vengenance.

Fact is, RV had a top 3 start when the chaos unfolded and he got hung up on Reed. After that things went from bad to worse.

BillC That was a great race! RV will win again. Boy everyone that said DM18 wasn't going to hold on to the red plate for long better take a look at the average lap times. If he continues with the good luck missing the first turn action he'll be in the top 3 in Vegas.
That was the best race i've seen in a long time. I like it better without one dominant rider. Even if my favorite rider isn't the one winning.
And TC need to stop riding over his head and finish without crashing.

@Killo - I'm sure it will be posted here soon, but I just watched RV's GoPro from A3, it's posted on vital, it includes the lap 3 RV lowside that CR was able to run to the inside of, but MA decided against riding around the outside of and parked his bike on RV's. I would love to see another camera angle on it, but it looks pretty clear that MA is more interested in keeping RV down than he is in getting the 800 bike off of the 1. I think RV gets a free pass the next time MA is riding a wide bike in front of him . . .

I am not going to argue, but the fact is.. Smaller bikes more fun to watch. Lighter bikes more fun to watch. Put the best riders on a smaller lighter bike and I promise you that the races will be nail biters. Not snooze fests..

Fine. Same applies for a 250f. A factory level 250f is equally lighter than a factory 450f.
I can't stress enough for people to YouTube a 1990 races and spend 10min watching. They will have a change of heart fast..

How are people comparing laptimes 250 to 450, when it started raining before the 450 main and the 250s had a dry track? It doesn't matter what size bike, the talent is what dictates the quality of racing. When you have evenly matched talent, you get good racing. When you have tracks that allow LOTS of passing back and forth, coupled with evenly matched talent, you get even better racing. Did I miss something in the 250 class? Was there a 15 lap battle for the lead? Or a 10 lap battle even, for 2nd? Or did we see follow the leader for the most part? I recall Roczen getting a good start, Tomac a not so good start, and the race following the script from that point on. Flip the scenario on the same track, and we'll see Tomac cruise to a win and Roczen finishing in Tomac's position.

Talent dictates good racing?? That makes absolutely zero sense. I can watch a pee wee race of 10 kids all talentless my flailing for the lead and enjoy the heck out of it. Or I can the talented Ryan villipoto run away with a 20sec lead and fall asleep.

The reality here, and I proved to my moto maniac friend last night that said the exact same thing you guys are saying, is that the bikes dictate the level of racing. I showed him race after race, Carmichael reed and ferry, McGrath emig larocco Huffman, Stanton Bradshaw etc.. He finally admitted to me "I see what your saying Rick. These smaller lighter bikes change everything. The racing is much tighter, guys squaring up everywhere, side by side, multiple passes a lap constantly."
The weren't going as fast also because the tracks were different. Today it's stupid rhythm after rhythm that every rider on the track does, wheels never on the ground.. Wait for a whoop section or 180 to make a pass.
I'm night smokin crack here.. I'm telling you the way it is. 4 stroke racing coupled with new tracks has absolutely killed it.
Even David pingree in his ASK PING column said exactly what I said and he challenged the readers to watch an old race and take the test. Like most people, nobody did except Please don't hate us. Everybody talks the talk but not many people actually do something about it. He did, and he came out and said there is a huge difference.

Its only going to get worse. Wait another 5 years.. Freight train NASCAR city.

That is poetry in motion to see a guy gap a field of the best riders in the world.. To watch him carve the corners and gather speed where nobody else is.. I love it also.. Tight racing is awesome, but so are the runaways sometimes..

I don't mind occasional runaways. I like watching RV go into hyper speed.. But one thing I noticed, I think older tracks are much wider. Maybe that's what allows the 3 side by side cross cross racing.
They should look into that..

I can't remember the last 450 race with a 4 way battle slam fest to the finish can you?? Lets take it a step further, how you ever watched 500 two stroke Supercross?? It was just like 450 SX, very fast but very boring. The harder it is to stop a bike, the less exciting it is. A factory two stroke is 30lbs lighter, once something with mass has motion, you know the answer.
