Racer X Race Report: Anaheim 3

Sunday, February 3, 2013 | 4:35 AM

As Monster Energy Supercross signs off from Angel Stadium for the final time in 2013, the feeling as you leave is much the same as the first time the tour stopped here five weeks ago. Yup, this season is going to be crazy.

And, Davi Millsaps is going to be the points leader. The Rockstar Energy Racing rider logged another solid night to finish second, making him essentially the only consistent rider in the championship. Everyone else, and we mean everyone, is totally up and down. Witness the tale of tonight’s race winner. Ready?

The story of the air shock on Ryan Dungey’s Red Bull KTM added another chapter when the shock suddenly started losing air right as the gate was dropping for his heat race. The rear of the bike collapsed, and Dungey rolled down the starting line and then pulled off, resigned to the Last Chance Qualifier with the worst gate pick. There, he didn’t get a good start, and, worse, crashed in a pile up with others, even getting separated from his bike at one point. Incredibly, he got back to it and charged back to third, but still found a large gap between himself and N-Fab TiLube’s Phil Nicoletti and HRT/MotoThump’s Jimmy Albertson. But Dungey dug deep and caught them from way back, and when Nicoletti bobbled on the final lap, Albertson and Dungey and charged past to take the final transfers to the main. This gave Dungey the 20th gate pick for that race, but, he had just used that same gate for the LCQ, so he knew what to do with it and swept all the way around the first turn in fourth. Next, in turn three, came a huge pileup reminiscent of last weeks’ massive second-turn melee, with Chad Reed once again at the helm of it. Dungey snuck through into second, then passed leader Mike Alessi (Smartop/MotoConcepts Racing) to take the lead. Suddenly, Dungey’s night went from incredibly bad, to incredibly good.

“That LCQ, that was as nervous as I’ve ever been,” said Dungey’s Team Manager, Roger DeCoster. “More nervous than I’ve been for a championship—even more nervous than championships I’ve won myself!”

Brayton (10) just edged Alessi for the holeshot.

Oh no, not again!

Dungey then dealt with some pressure from Millsaps, and the points leader showed him a wheel a few times. But Dungey found his groove and pulled away, and from there, he went on to win his first main event of the season.

Meanwhile, Millsaps had to deal with pressure from James Stewart (Yoshimura Suzuki) and Stewart passed him for second. Just five laps into the main event, Stewart was about three seconds behind Dungey, but instead of making a run for the lead, Dungey continued to pull away, and Stewart then had to deal with Millsaps again. Justin Barcia (Team Honda Muscle Milk) was also right there in fourth. Millsaps eventually worked his way back around Stewart when Stewart bobbled, and then Stewart bobbled again, and Barcia moved into third. With about three laps to go, Millsaps went off the track and nearly crashed, allowing Barcia to close on him. But the rookie couldn’t get close enough to make a pass, and Millsaps took his second-straight second-place finish. Barcia, though, was happy to collect third after two-straight crash-induced DNFs.

Next came Stewart in fourth, who like Barcia, was just happy to log 20 laps near the front in what has turned out to be a rough season.

undefined
Dungey has now won five SX races on his KTM 450. He's up to second in points, too.

undefined
Millsaps and Stewart battled for much of the main, Millsaps came out on top.

undefined
Justin Barcia said his goal was just to do 20 laps. He did them well and finished third.

undefined
Rough night for the champ, who took eighth.

Reed (TwoTwo Motorsports Honda) came back for fifth. In the third turn, he and Justin Brayton tangled and went down, leading to a pileup. Both Reed and Brayton said it was just a racing incident, and they both tried to dive down to the inside. From there, they both had their work cut out for them, and Reed salvaged fifth (and was happy with his riding) while Brayton (JGR Toyota/Yamaha) was tenth.

Oh, and what about Ryan Villopoto, the winner of the last two races? The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was held up in the third-turn melee, and then crashed in a corner coming through traffic. He was then run into by Alessi, who was right behind him. Villopoto literally threw Alessi’s bike off of his, but found himself in 16th. He rallied back to eighth. In front of him came Andrew Short, who took sixth, and Trey Canard (Team Honda Muscle Milk) who had several crashes and mistakes but still salvaged seventh.

Behind Villopoto, in ninth, came Dodge Sycuan Suzuki’s Broc Tickle, and Brayton. Overall, it was a crazy and crash-filled night.

The 250 class was a little less dramatic. Joey Savatgy (J-Star JDR KTM) holeshot but Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, points leader and winner of the last race in Oakland, started second. Roczen quickly got Nelson for the lead, and Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos took over second. Meanwhile Eli Tomac, winner of the first three races this season and the defending 250 West Champion, was about 11th early.

Davalos kept the heat on Roczen for half of the race, staying within 1.5 seconds of him. Down the stretch, though, Roczen pulled away to take his second-straight win and further stretch his points lead. Davalos took second and Tomac scratched out a third despite the bad start. Kyle Cunningham (Star Yamaha) and Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Racing) came through the pack to round out the top five.

undefined
Kenny boy does it again. Next stop? Victory meal at In and Out burger. Perhaps served on a red plate.

undefined
Davalos salvaged something for Pro Circuit. Teammate Tyla Rattray didn't make the main.

undefined
Tomac needed a good start but didn't get one. He's down 20 points to Roczen, but there are four races to go.

this truly has been one of the best seasons to date of Fo Fity racing. Millsaps IS the real deal. And, the "smiling assasin", #29 throw'n in solid "I"LL SHOW YOU GUYS" how its done on a warmed over production bike is great. Probably only a few ticks below the trickness of Davi's bike..

So I guess the question about whether these air shocks can lose pressure has been answered. Just glad it didn't happen to Dungy in the race. That LCQ was the most exciting race of the night. Hats off to the Dunge.

Man, if Reed, Stewart and Canard can finally get wins this season it probably set the record for number of different winners by a big gap. I respected the hell out of MC and RC but you have to admit their eras were kind of boring as far as the "Who will win?" question was concerned. Not bored this season!

I know we still have a long way to go in this season, but Millsaps look solid in this fight..And RV needs to get solid starts every week to get into the points hunt.. Of course he had a decent start until Reed struck again..

Some guys need to own up to the fact no matter how much they have bad-mouthed Millsaps in the past, he is a solid threat this season and they were wrong about him.. Of course they will back pedal and say they never said he couldnt do it, when they did.. But thats how it goes..

Profile Picture

Would have been an easy for race for RV1 had Chad Reed not turned into a bowling bowl for the second week in a row. Chad is trying to hard to get up front and its killing a lot riders strategies.

GWN wrote: 10:22am February 3, 2013

In my opinion these tracks that lack flow are producing the best racing. Feld and the builders should continue this trend and stay away from the typical supercross flow that the riders like. It is reminiscent of the early supercross track and battles. It may be easier to bring in outside money with exciting racing and unpredictability where more teams get the opportunity to be seen. Next step, get a few spotters for directing camera action. Hearing the crowd roar and knowing there is a key battle going on off camera is not the way to build drama.

Profile Picture
NikolaTesla wrote: 10:30am February 3, 2013

Villipoto is amazing and probably the fastest guy out there right now, but everyone has a weakness. RV tends to have problems on his bad nights probably because he can't accept not winning. If you think about that, its s lot like Stewart. If he is anywhere near the front he will probably win. If he has a problem on the start and ends up near the back, chances are he will find more trouble before the race is over. I love how there are so many different styles of riders on the gate and a bunch that can win. Whoever your favorite rider is you can make an argument for why he might win, but in the end none of these guys is ever a lock to win. Its making for a great season. Guys might need to learn to back it down a little and stay in the hunt every week if they want to be champ. Consistency is going to be needed to win the title this year. If the other racers don't find some Millsaps is going to be tough to catch.

NikolaTesla wrote: 10:32am February 3, 2013

@GWN I agree 100%. Flow might be nice for setting fast laps but it doesn't make the racing better.

Glad no mention of 'Millsaps is for real' again. No need to! At this point, I could see him with the red plate through the halfway point. Who knows? And we've got 4 winners in 5 races, with (I think) 7 guys capable of wins. What an awesome season, and the 250 class is more interesting now too.

Must have been two different races on last night!! Reed's front wheel clearly got hung up and dragged straight on into the berm! That's what happens in racing at times, plain and simple.

If anything, this type of stuff adds to the excitement of the season..always need someone throwing in a new scenario.

Villopoto's story is all about Mike Alessi.

Was watching T&S during the race and 'Poto was doing well and making ground in what appeared to be smart-mode. Finished 1st lap in 11th, 2nd in 9th (check the charts). RV was 2 spots in front of Reed & he had just passed Alessi when Hyper Mike -apparently thinking he's gong to re-pass RV- crashes into his lft-rear and not only takes him out, but tangles the bikes.

When RV finishes lap 3, he is in 19th, has lost 15-18 seconds, and is so far back that he doesn't catch another rider until lap FIVE or another until lap SEVEN.

RV's race is the story of Mike Alessi

What a clutch performance from the Dunge! If he hadnt made the main he would be out of the hunt and Millsaps would have an 18 point lead over Canard. Also, Ralph Shaheen SUCKS big time and hopefully his contract is up after this year and Speed Channel can sign Weege to do the color commentary with Fro. I almost find myself wanting to hit the mute button, until Dianna Dahlgren speaks then Im all ears.

@elsinor - I'm not a MA superfan, but RV clearly lost the front end and was on the ground all by himself before MA ended up on top of him. The SPEED replay didn't have a good angle on the pileup, I was hoping someone that saw could enlighten us on what happened? Reed cut to the inside and it looked like MA could have cut to the outside and avoided RV? MA might be to blame for dropping their 8th and 9th places to 18th and 19th by taking too long to get his bike off of RV, but RV crashed all on his own, check the replay.

I think Dungey crashed in practice also, just to add to the drama. I'm surprised that the air shock isn't dialed in. Seems like they had all off-season to test it. I like when he said about the spring shock "the first time I went through the whoops, I knew it was good". Talk about trial by fire.

RV still looks like he's got a slight edge in speed, but if he has too many more nights like A1 and A3, that might not be enough. 12 rounds is a lot left, but his margin of error is decreasing.

Oh no he's gotta try to blast through the pack so Ralph and Ricky can swoon over him like a young girl with Bieber Fever...

The "pass of the night" is always a joke.

I have no problem with KTM testing an air-shock. My problem is testing it with a former champ and current contender while in the middle of a championship battle! Let Georke or some other rider test it or wait until RD has either won the championship or is out of contention. KTM you have made all the right moves the last 2 1/2 years. DON"T BE STUPID NOW.

What in the HELLwas Emig babbling about? - "How unlucky it is for Reed to get 'stood up' twice in a row". Ahem Jeff- I didn't see anybody else there except a haybale.
It seems that Reedy is the new "most dangerous rider on the track"- and where the hell did that come from, it's so unlike him. He must be feeling desperate at this point in time.

Villopoto is hitting the dirt as often as Stewart was supposed to. It didn't seem fair that he avoided all that carnage last week- let it be known that Chad Reed does not discriminate.........
Stewart made the same mistake twice in the same turn and lost 2 spots- better work on those right handed rutted turns. Maybe it was the bum knee.

Dungey looked like the happiest guy on earth- Well done Dunge! You had me nervous in the lcq- like what if the katoom woulda stalled out or something.
Davi has been riding great but he also has a bit of luck going his way- Reed bounced off of him and Alessi did too- and he stayed up and motored away. Thats what makes a champion- great riding and a little bit of luck. We have 12 more rounds to go- keep it up Davi- yer lookin good.

@soulvillemusic ~ Check out the race winners in the 2011 series. I am not sure exactly how many there were but RD, RV, JS, CR, and TC all won at least one (TC won 3 that year).

As for all of you RV fans...give it a rest. Y'all act like RV is superhuman. So what if he crashed and crashed again and made it up to 8th? Big deal!!! A few weeks ago he started way back and moved into 2nd so we know he is fast enough to do that. Quit blaming everybody else. He had a bad night and most of it is due to his own ability. I don't remember hearing you all talk about how TC came from 16th to 4th in Oakland (and not only did he get caught up in turn 2 that week he also had another get off) or RD from 12th to 4th. So face it RV was not the fastest on the track, quit blaming 800 and 22.

I also agree with GWN and NikolaTesla about the flow. Take the flow out and let these guys race a real track.

@RCRDDW what was Rv supposed to do???? KTM guys....Enjoy the win....the next one won't come so easy......@MREED113 why you worrying about RV and JS7 shouldn't you wondering about who Havoc22 will wreck next week mate.... one race and already Rv can't ride slick tracks ,can't come from the back & is out of it.....rookie morons that hide when anybody but their boy wins.....pass of the night was the Dunge' squeakin into second in the lcq....When RD5 comes from 5th to the front in the main with all the players involved i'll get all impressed...I'm not handin him the crown just yet......it was a good win ..i've seen great ones.

Tomac's bad starts have been a gift to Roczen. If Eli gets good starts, Roczen won't come in first place.

Happy for RD and DM, but I still say RV takes the title and wins 8 this year. Hope reed , Barcia ans JS can keep improving

Gotta say that I expected no less from the RV-can't-standers. Those of you who take one race where he washes out AFTER getting held up by another Reedy 2nd turn induced pileup, and still comes back to 8th from 18th on lap 4, must be too dumb to realize how dumb you sound. You should realize any fan of any rider who pumps their guy up is going to sound just like a Stewtard from a few years ago, when using such profound bias. We've seen Dungey only get up to 8th from a 12th place start this year, yet when he wins it's "all hail the King!". When RV wins last week, it was all because the competition got held up. RV gets held up and he's the new human lawn dart. Once again human nature rears its ugly head. Nothing better than when people WATCH something happen and then portray it differently when they speak about it. Dungey did great, but imagine if Nicoletti had not bobbled in the LCQ! Everyone would be lambasting Dungey and KTM for failing to qualify and using that shock! Also imagine if Davi got the worse of it when colliding with Alessi. Game of inches.

For those of you guys bashing Reed this crash, go watch the video again. Brayton was high in the turn in 2nd and cut down hard to try to dive under Alessi. Reed was going in that spot. Brayton even said that it was no ones fault as they both were trying to dive under to the inside. Its racing, it happens.

Reed did cause the chain reaction in the previous race, but again, its racing. Going 4 wide down a whoop section and you get out of shape shiit can happen.

Tonewall, did you hear? RV's all done! It's all good because the RV-haters need a little sunshine in their lives and lucky for them RV keeps things intresting. It's gotta suck to hate RV and still have him be considered the favorite while he's in 4th place and 17 points out in such a talented field. I would hate having polls before the races asking how many races RV will win too. Davi's running away with it anyway! He increased his points lead 5 rounds in. Does anyone think Davi won't have that race where he sees himself in 16th after a lap? If he doesn't then he just might win this thing.

Awesome racing again this weekend. I love seeing the parity. Good for DM18 for being the ONE guy being consistant. And good job to Dungey for not getting rattled and sneaking a win. I didn't think he would pull it off. Stoked to see another round in person this weekend in SD!

tonewall..i cant compare stewi to Cr because stewi has crashed more times in one sx season, that being last season, than Cr has his entire career...its unusual to see Cr crash, its even more rare when stewi `doesnt crash`...just the facts toneloche...wild thang ..
