Anaheim 3 Super Spoiler Report
Sunday, February 3, 2013 | 1:20 AMBig shakeup in Monster Energy Supercross tonight, as Ryan Dungey came from the very last transfer spot in the LCQ to a main event win, a huge recovery. Meanwhile, points leader Davi Millsaps rode solid and held on for second, while the riders right behind him in points, Trey Canard and Ryan Villopoto, had crash-filled nights and could only muster 7th and 8th.
Justin Barcia joined Millsaps and Dungey on the podium. James Stewart and Chad Reed were fourth and fifth.
Dungey took the lead from Mike Alessi on the second lap, then held strong under early pressure from Millsaps to eventually pull away. Stewart passed Millsaps for second, but Millsaps then got him back, and Stewart made another mistake, allowing Barcia to pass him as well.
In the 250 Class, Ken Roczen won his second straight race, topping Martin Davalos, who pressed him for the first half of the race. Third went to Eli Tomac, who had a terrible start.

Two weeks in a row.....turn two melees??? Chad Reed the race wrecker.
Happy for Dungey though....quite a night for him. Talk about a roller coaster.
Millsaps keeps the Red plate for again.....he looked good and is for real
Havoc22?....step away from the bridgeport and cad machine...leave the KTM alone ..its there.!!!!Nice ride by RD5 he flat won that one....
What a crazy night for Dungey. Bet that air shock isn't on the bike next weekend.
Hey guys some of the Euros are not that bad ... Kenny show them on their home soil. Way to go RD ... when the going gets ...
Yeah, but he didn't win it straight up.
Hmmm, I do believe that RD beat all the big boys "Straight up"! I guess the naysayers will have to find a new excuse for there guy getting beat now!!!
I really need to invent that sarcasm font
One of the 'Big Boys' got jacked up in the first turn by the new, not so consistent Reed.
Reed is on his "Checkers or wreckers" tour this year. LOL!
Is it too soon to make Villopoto crash jokes?
So what's the deal with Reed? Has he lost all his marbles or what? Tsk tsk. Another yard sale.
A lot of people must feel like fools after A3... As they should. Dungey got out front with Millsaps, Stewart, and Barcia right there, and walked away to an easy looking win. 3rd to 5th place guy, huh Bowyer?
Along with Dungey's much needed, he got a little lucky on how the points played out tonight.......Man! 2nd place now.
By 1point, but still in 2nd !
Series is gettin' good
if rv was at the front he would gap rd. js needs his knee fixed milsaps is riding good but he should never passes js straight up
yeah but...but...but...but...but...but........
and my "stamp" must be broke, it hasn't been working worth a damn.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda......here we go!
That was fun to watch, best race of the year (for the fans)? I just watched the 450 2nd corner a few times slo mo fwd and back, my $.02 is that JB10 and CR both jumped into the inside line, racing incident (2 weeks in a row). After KRoc won the 250's I told my Pops there was no way RD5 was going to win the 450's . . . glad I didn't put any $ on that!
You know, its not that Millsaps is the fastest rider out there, although he certainly can run with the best of them, but he is the only rider whose dialed in right now. With Stewart's knee, Reed's uncharacteristic crashing, Villopoto's silly crashes, Barcia's two DNF's, Dungey's setup issues, and Canard's inability to capitalize on good starts, Millsaps is the only title contender whose results reflect that of a champion. He now has a 14 point lead, and in a field like this, that is huge.
I dont know about that porcupine........Poto didnt have that fire tonight, like he showed the last two rounds ???
So glad to see my guy win but, like I said last week, being top 3 instead of 8th or 10th after a couple of turns has WAY too much weight in deciding the winner and first turn crashes play WAY too big a role in deciding the points championship. I still say we need a 30 minutes + 2 laps main and more liberal red flag rules as the competition is at an all time high and only getting more intense next year with ET and DW coming.
GO DUNGE!!!
Interesting numbers fact that no one probably cares about: after 5 races last year, there were 3 guys within 25 pts of the leader, 6 guys within 50 pts, and 13 guys within 75pts. Same #'s this year.
porcupinetree: I was wondering how long it would take for a dumbass to post on here...
Way to go Dungey!
It just keeps getting better and better.
Shocking win for Dungey. I bet he makes a good glass of lemonade. He sure let the air out on the competition. Starts the night on a hardtail and still kicks tail. He saw his shadow today and it predicts an early spring.
Interesting night for sure and I am glad I went. We had a good veiw of that turn that sucked up so many souls. But watching RV pitching Alessi's bike was something. Dungey got his first win of the season and KTM swept the house tonight, so congrats to them. With tomac being 20 points down, it is not going to be easy for him. And congrats to Millsaps once again. I thought for sure those whoops were going to suck up a few riders, some of those guys were swapping pretty bad during practice. I guess I will have to watch the replays on the tube.
as if reed or stew ever tried to randomly take riders out on a regular basis, the ignorance of some fans is unfortunate
@CZ - Speed didn't have a good camera angle on the RV lowside/MA runover on lap 3. Let us know what you saw, the replay only showed RV losing the front, CR sneaking by on the inside and MA appearing to simply park his bike on RV instead of running around the outside of RV? RV was 8th at the time and MA was 9th, next thing we know they're 16th and 18th. Anyone??
Beyond excited to see KTM sweep round 5. Great job to both Roczen and Dungey get the wins. Dungey barely getting outta that LCQ alive, only to go on and convincingly beat everyone out there was epic. Another tough break for Reed. His starts are pretty decent. Can't wait to see him get past that one turn. I think he woulda been on the box tonight had he not gone down. I think JS7 gave it all he had. Pretty hard to keep that pace with a torn acl. He's getting better but the other riders are just too good right now. Gotta be tough for him. I wish Canard could put a full ride together and get a win. I believe he's due for a win. Great job to Davi and Bam Bam as well
Congratulations to Ryan Dungey who had to deal with the utmost adversity the entire night, to come out with the win. He has taken a lot of heat here as of late, and his ego needed a well deserved boost.
The same goes for young Ken Roczen as he too has been the brunt disrespectful criticism by those who have slandered him from day one, and that he should just settle for being a 2nd place rider, and go home. He won this race tonight straight up and should quiet a few (negative) posters with tonight's performance. Congratulations for Two in a Row, Ken Roczen.
Congratulations to the entire Red Bull KTM Team for a One & One Top Box Podium in 2013 Monster Energy Anaheim 3 SX event.
Great Performance, Roger DeCoster and Co.!!!
Quite a race. RD dealt with adversity the best way possible. Milsaps and the Suzuki are a match made in heaven.... the Suzuki is a great bike and Stewart looks good on it too. Bam Bam has the second best bike out there and was there to snag the last podium spot. Reed and Canard are not in their happy place yet and Villopoto just had a bad night and scraped out what he could..... the best season ever continues.
Sorry Shorty you deserve accolades for taking a store bought bike into the top 10.... well done Andrew
Forgot all about Shorty, 6th on a privateer program! Somebody should give that boy a ride!!
Wow, what nerves of steel Dungey showed in that LCQ. It would have been easy to tighten up and make a costly mistake. He showed some pretty agressive passing too.Even Stewart commended Dungey on the LCQ.( I think James is finally growing up)
Reed has taken out more riders in the past 2 weeks than JS has his whole career so I guess we can finally bury that stupid talking point. Short is killing it on that weekend warrior bike.
Does anyone remember all of the clowns claiming that Millsaps would only have the red plate for one race? I guess someone should go back and call them all out. +14 at this stage is looking like a championship run to me.
@Oddjob = Troll
Some people on here have seriously NEVER raced a Motocrosser.
Brayton turned down early, Reed had nowhere to go. No one at fault. It just sometimes happen when you RACE.
Ripdown - your snide, petty & arrogant remarks about Reed are getting old and show your poor character.
If I was RD5, I would tell Roger to stick the Air shock up his ass until he gets the thing worked out. He can R&D a major part with someone else's career, hire Short and put it on his bike but leave the Championship contenders bike alone with that crap. You could tell during DeCoster's TV interview, he knew he went a little too far.
Boy, Dungeys charge after falling and getting held up in the LCQ is one of the best rides I have seen in the last ten years. Epic!
Kudos to Tomac for not pissing and moaning on the podium. He has to be somewhat devastated to lose even more points this week but he didnt show it. Easy to admire that kid. He now has to hope Roczen starts running into the multitude of Hondas out there. I dont see it though, the kids been solid every round.
@ptibull
Wow! What and ig norant comment about women! If it wasn't for you "guys" oog ling, cheering, panting and who knows what else over the monster girls....they wouldn't be there.
Erin Bates has been out there and knows her motocross.Bet you or half of you guys on this post with your spelling errors, inconsistencies and crude remarks to each other could do better job.....Remember Bob Hannah as a live commentator? He was so bad, they fired him...
Idiot!
well done again to short but i laugh when people go on about a shop bought bike, what a joke, it may not be factory but i bet its got a lot of after market goodies on it like a tuned barrel and head, ohlins or some other trick suspension, carbon fibre bits, an akapovik exhaust or similar etc etc !!
New E-bay listing:
Slightly used KTM Air Shock....just like the factory guys use......um USED.
Good thing it didn't sack out over a triple. Ryan could be three inches shorter today.
Excellent job RD and DM !
Another thing.
I would like to see the format revised to the "good ole days" where you have one more true "last chance" to get in the final. Only the winner gets in. So you have three chances to make the main.
Fans pay to see title contenders on the track...not in the pits.
Congrats to RD5. Glad to see Millsaps being consistently fast. I dont understand how some of you can not get it that being a good points racer is being consistent. As far as reed goes, shit happens. What is with all of this this rider or that rider did or didnt do it straight up. 20 guys line up to start the race so how they finish, wether it be good or bad, they did it straight up. Thats one of the things that will continue to hold this sport back. Most of the media and alot of the fans always want there to be only 2 or 3 guys to talk about no matter how many fast guys and contenders there really are.
All good stuff and a great night of racing. I want to give Barcia credit for stopping and shaking RD's hand given what happened last week. Barcia is really coming around. Best night of 250 and 450 racing in a long time. Dungey's performance should be a great example to every youth rider to never give up and just keep charging.....actually, that is a good example to any racer.
great job speed and RD5, dungey is lucky in one big way, good thing that airshock flubbed on the start and not during take off..Short is probably making good coin on the contingency $$ if they still do that program..all in all this is a great season..Reed has got to be pissed..
I'll start by saying i'm not a big chad Reed fan but he understands that if you dont start up in the top 5 you are not going to win. He is getting average starts and trying to make stuff happen on the opening lap. Everyone is going for it early and he got caught in some bad situations. It's going to be that Kind of year where holeshots are more important than ever.
MXBob...Are you Arizona MXBob or MN MXBob or Turkey Creek MXBob?
Either way, you're right, it wasn't straight up!
Go Dungey!
so.........no whoops after the start and we get the same result. which track obstacle do we need to eliminate this week? why didnt they red flag the race? the show was compromised from its full potential ...........it could have been the greatest freekin race ever ran,,,,,,,,,ever! sarcasm........lick it up b!tches!! mb we need to eliminate cr22 from the track as he was the reason for both "most incredible turn 2 crash of all time" ! seriously tho..... it was dirt bikes racing around a track, and i enjoyed every second of it. but i've seen better.......and worse . just wait, next week just may be epic ! hahahaha
@b787tech,Pitbull
What does RC know about component testing............really ?
Roger / Ryan. have a set for trying that shock at this point. Lets see what they do for San Diego
You cant question RC passion but I have to agree the he is not very GOATish with his language skills.
Windham was superb during the supercross online webcast.......I'd be suprprised if he is not the booth next year
Did anyone notice Tomac wave off the ambulance chaser after his Oakland crash.
I feel bad for Erin but please...........stop.

The secret to Dungey is to get him mad and you know the air shock is what's doing it lol. When he's po'ed, he flat out rides better. The way I saw him ride yesterday is how I remember him in the lights and it was fun to see that fight in him again.
Erin Andrews. Like most laidies in sports interviewing know nothing and care even less about that sport. If they had any talent they would not take a job where they know there only qualification is there looks. At least the monster energy girls aren't pretending to do anything but act as a sex symbol.
Same hold true for Erin Bates
i prefer the weather chicks.......now those b's know what the hell they're talking 'bout ! and they are always teasing you.......... using sexually charged phrases loaded with "hot", "sticky" , & "wet" ! ...........oh look, its 8 after lol
Dungey always sets the standard for professionalism. His never say die, never give up attitude is the stuff legends are made of. He takes a lot of heat for not always being the fastest, not always making the most aggressive passes, but he always manages to keep himself in the title hunt. He makes his sponsors proud, which is why he is one of the highest paid racers in the sport.
@motocynic
I agree ..... people rag on Dungey for this and for that ..... but I'll bet only RV might have made a bigger pay check (salary and bonuses) racing off-road motorcycles the last few years .... at least on this planet. It's not about always being the fastest. These guys race (and are paid big bucks) to win championships. And with the field as deep as it is now, no one is going to go 16 and 0 indoors and 24 and 0 outdoors anymore. Did you really like to see guys sweep all the moto's? There will be crappy days for every rider. As hard as they have to try now ... things WILL go wrong. This is great racing.
@Forty - You tracked me down. I live in the park in the city of Niceville.
http://www.cityofniceville.org/turkey.html
All races are straight up.............No one is handicapped !
Saying is you have to be in it to win it !! LOL !
The 3rd turn crash with Reed that took out RV was Mike Alessi's fault. At my house after the race we went back and watched it in slow mo. Alessi went from the outside on the right, hit the jump and on the face went to the left side of the track. Brayton (who left of Alessi) in an attempt not to land on Mike jerked over to the right right as he was taking off and landed in Reed's line. It looked their their bikes locked up together and RV ended up getting caught in the crossfire.
I've grown to like Mike Alessi over the last couple of years but he has got to stop swerving so much in Supercross. You can get away with it safely for the most part in outdoors but not in Supercross. One of these days its going to get somebody seriously hurt.
Great show last night although I can't wait for Tomac and Kroc to go head to head again. Barcia is also showing some real talent on the big bike. Not a Stewart fan but we need him in the mix. I don't pull for him but I don't dislike him as I used to.
It seems like there was some sort of meeting because for the first time all of the riders answered the questions with answers instead of a scripted list of people to thank. It was very refreshing and made the post race interviews enjoyable cause they talked about the race. I think they should be given time to thank everyone but keep it at the end of the inteview. Even though I don't agree with everything the crew says, I don't fault them. They're just not professional broadcasters and I think they try to hard to sound like one. It's like listening to Warrick Dunn talk about football. He's very full of himself and its painfull to listen to.
Hopefully , Roger will run some Slime in that air shock!!!
Guys, go rewatch the crash with Reed and Brayton. Brayton cut down hard trying to dive underneath Alessi as Reed was driving into the turn low to try to get underneath Brayton. Brayton even commented it was a racing incident that they were both trying to dive underneath at the same time.
Reed got squirrely in the whoops at Oakalnd and caused that chain reaction, which again was racing, but was not at fault this weekend. Just 2 bikes trying to occupy the same space at once.
@pitbull You're not old school, your just ignorant.
Ricky isn't the greatest with english, but I can't see how anyone can question anything the guys says about racing, testing or motorcycles. He's the baddest dude ever and knows more about that shit than anyone here or in the booth with him.
The answer to all the announcing problems is simple-TRAVERS AND KOSTER !
Looking forward to other previous winners stepping up to the top now and REALLY making this the season that many thought last year would be. C'mon Trey, Chad and James! Maybe we can get another first timer in there as well.
"It's like listening to Warrick Dunn talk about football. He's very full of himself and its painfull to listen to. "
I meant to say Warren Sapp.
can someone explain straight up????
you practice you qualify and you start from behind a start gate........
you get 15 or 20 laps
in life you can only have one winner
and to win first you have to finish.
so in my book every time the gate drops its staight up.
getting knocked down crashing breaking down and even having a developement part failure (apparently the gain in less kick in the whoops was worth the risk) is all in the game,
long may the randomness of supercross continue as i for sure will be youtubing rd6 to see what unfolds.
brit1............ I was being sarcastic, and so was MXBob.
"straight up" is a mis used term, and doesn't even belong in SX/MX conversations.
There is no such thing as straight up.
