RIP Caleb Moore

Thursday, January 31, 2013 | 4:55 PM

Racer X is saddened to report the tragic passing of snowmobile rider Caleb Moore, who had suffered injuries following a failed jump attempt on January 24 at Winter X Games. Moore was 25 years old.

Motocrossers might remember Caleb for his ATV exploits, as he became a freestyle pioneer for that set. At the 2007 Steel City National (for bikes) Caleb and his brother Colten performed an ATV freestyle demo, complete with backflips. They both would transition into snowmobile freestyle and collect a variety of X Games hardware -- four medals for Caleb, specifically. Colten also suffered a crash at WInter X Games and suffered a separated pelvis.

Our thoughts go out to the Moore family. Below are links to additional news stories from ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

That is crazy...didn't he walk away (with assistance) from that wreck? I just can't fathom what the family must be going through.

Prayers to the family, who can take solace in the fact, Caleb was doing what he loved.. RIP

X Games and to a lesser degree motocross, are about the only sports where you get in a major wreck and they have you walk off the field. If you wreck in NASCAR they make you get in the ambulace and go to the in-field care center to get checked out by a doctor. Skate boarder Jake Brown took the hardest hit I've ever seen a person take at the 07 X Games. I thought he was dead. They let him get up and walk off. I guess It makes for bad TV if they have to scrape the up and haul them off.

I didn't know him, but he was a friend of a friend. It hits pretty close to home, as it probably does for some of the other D23 guys one here. Godspeed Caleb.

I hope people commenting here have more class than ones on the two linked websites.

@Verge People get head injuries all the time, may not even lose consciousness, and later die. I'm sure he was not forced to walk away.

Death at 25yrs old going for the gold...not bad considering millions of scum Liberals in this country waste life waiting on the welfare check.

Truly sad. I think we all knew that the day of someone dying from an injury during the X Games competition was inevitable. The things that they are doing today, compared to when the X Games started almost twenty years ago, has reached a point I don't think any of us could have predicted.

Sad story. It does come with the territory though. RIP man.

Sidenote...

Why the F^^K are people doing backflips on a 450lb machine? Can't they lighten those rigs up a couple hundred?

@Verge - I saw that a few years back, but hadn't seen the clip recently. Just did a littel youtubing, WOW, that dude was lucky to survive. Was like jumping off a building. I can't fathom how he was able to shuffle off like that.

@Moto87 - brilliant saying - I'm writing that one down.

I think forums like this are a great way to acknowledge and remember people like Caleb. Yes it is a horrible tragedy, but anybody who straps on a helmet and gets on a dirt bike, ATV, or snow-mo knows the risks, especially at that level. I think there is a happy medium in there somewhere, but I sure would rather go out doing Xgames backflips than crapping in my pants as a lonely old man in a rest home.

You couldn't be more ignorant, 'Pizzacorner' - I know a lot of liberals, and not one of them doesn't have a JOB...
