Grand Prix of Sweden
1993 250cc
Has a major professional motocross race ever been boycotted or canceled due to safety? Depends on who you ask. Grand Prix races in both Europe and South America have been abandoned after a single moto due to blinding dust or impassible mud; the ’91 Hangtown National was halted after the first moto due to infield flooding. And back in the 1970s, the rain-drenched St. Louis Trans-AMA was cancelled after the first 250 Support class moto because promoter Edison Dye realized he wasn’t going to have enough spectators to cover the purse. And the closest we’ve ever come on the AMA Supercross circuit was the ’95 Las Vegas finale, when a local power outage that left the track somewhat dark led to several top riders, including Jeremy McGrath, Doug Henry, and Mike Kiedrowski, to boycott the main event (though their collective decision to sit out was as much about an overall frustration with the old series promoters than it was about safety). And just last year the MXGP paddock voiced their displeasure with track preparation at the French round after several top riders did not line up for the Saturday qualifiers. Their actions led to changes by series organizer InFront.
